Start with a base you can return to
For a Lisbon trip with your parents, begin the hotel search in the lower streets around Baixa, Rossio and Praça da Figueira. A room you can return to after lunch may be more useful than a view from a hilltop. Treat the hills as separate outings rather than making an uphill walk part of every journey home. If waterfront time and hotel breaks matter more than the historic centre, compare Oriente and Parque das Nações as a second base.
Travelling with parents does not imply a mobility limitation. Ask what makes a day tiring: stairs, standing in queues, an uninterrupted walk or an uphill return after dinner. Those answers change the hotel choice more than a broad age category. Pick one place everyone wants to see, then look at the route back to the room. A short distance on a map can still include a difficult gradient.

Baixa puts lower-town sightseeing close to your base, with the activity and noise of a central district. Oriente suits a stay built around the waterfront, but adds a journey when you visit the old centre. For a short break, choosing one of these bases is usually simpler than moving luggage between both. Neither district name guarantees that an individual hotel entrance, room or bathroom meets your needs.
Separate the lower streets from the hills
Visit Portugal distinguishes the relatively even areas at Rossio and Praça do Comércio from the steep, irregular streets around Alfama and the castle. Rua Augusta is pedestrianised, but restaurant terraces can interrupt the walking space. A hotel in Baixa helps you keep some outings on lower ground; it does not remove Lisbon's hills from every itinerary.
Hotel search sites may combine Baixa and Chiado in one neighbourhood filter. Check the street address and actual entrance rather than relying on that label. See whether an uphill section is part of the daily return, where a vehicle can stop and whether the last stretch has steps. A photograph of the river or castle from a room says little about the approach to its front door.
If a viewpoint is important, make it the main outing for that part of the day. Agree on the vehicle drop-off and return pickup, since a car ride uphill can still leave a sloping or stepped approach. Descending on foot is not automatically the easy option. Keep a lower-town alternative if the return would be uncomfortable, and avoid promising a step-free castle visit on the strength of a general city guide.

A modest day around the squares
From a base near the Tejo hotel, spend the morning around Praça da Figueira and Rossio, then follow Rua Augusta towards Praça do Comércio. Leave time for lunch and a seated break before returning to the hotel. Decide on any extra waterfront walking once you are there. This is an order of activities with space for rest, not a timetable with guaranteed walking times.

Passing a landmark and entering it are different activities. Walking beneath the Rua Augusta Arch does not mean its viewing area is easy to reach: the tourism authority describes a narrow staircase. Check entry arrangements, the last admission and toilets before choosing an indoor visit. If the queue is long, keeping the day to the street and squares is a valid plan in its own right.
Reserve an afternoon break in the room before arranging dinner. A nearby meal is easier to shorten than an evening built around a distant attraction. Check the restaurant's opening day and booking arrangements for your dates. Adding Belém and Sintra to the same day removes the benefit of having a convenient base; keep those as separate outings if they matter to your trip.

In rain or strong waterfront wind, reduce the outdoor loop. An indoor attraction is useful only if reaching its entrance and returning afterwards also suit the group. Do not assume that a sheltered destination provides an entirely covered route from the hotel. You can turn back before the river and still have spent a worthwhile morning in the lower town.
My Story Hotel Tejo and the room question
My Story Hotel Tejo is at Rua dos Condes de Monsanto 2. It is a different property from the brand's Rossio, Ouro and Figueira hotels. It is a candidate for a stay centred on Praça da Figueira and midday returns, rather than a guarantee of quiet or step-free access. Match the name and address on the booking confirmation before comparing room products.

The official Twin Room description lists 16 m², two single beds and a maximum of two people. This is a catalogue description; the bed arrangement and occupancy of the product selected for your dates still matter. Two parents and an adult child cannot assume that this twin room accommodates all three. If you choose two rooms, ask whether nearby allocation is possible and whether it is guaranteed.

The official Family Room is described as two communicating rooms, 32 m² in total, for up to four people, with different bed combinations. That specific product differs from booking two ordinary rooms and requesting adjacent allocation. Ask about bed separation and the space between beds if the photograph matters to your choice. Floor area alone does not establish luggage space, bed height or bathroom thresholds.

Before payment, ask about steps between the drop-off and reception, lift access to the booked floor and the shower entrance. If someone uses a mobility aid, provide its dimensions and the clearance needed. Check breakfast, luggage storage and early room access separately. An account of another guest's early check-in does not make it part of your reservation.

When Oriente makes more sense
Parque das Nações is worth comparing if broad waterfront spaces and breaks at the hotel are central to the trip. Visit Portugal describes relatively level pedestrian areas here, while also noting obstacles and uneven surfaces. Bollards, tree pits and decking can still affect the exact route. Think about where you will walk each day rather than treating the whole neighbourhood as uniformly accessible.

Tivoli Oriente Lisboa Hotel is at Avenida Dom João II 27. It is a candidate for a stay based around Oriente station and this part of the waterfront. The exterior photograph shows the station roof alongside the hotel, helping explain their relationship. It does not establish an indoor link or a step-free route. Confirm the exit, crossing and luggage drop-off you would actually use.

Returning here for a short rest during a day in the historic centre is less convenient than returning to Baixa. Group old-centre visits into one outing and leave other days for the Oriente area. Compare the exact beds and bathroom rather than relying on a view category. A river-view room does not itself guarantee quiet, suitable access or the space required by a particular guest.

If the group has different interests, agree on a meeting point and allow some independent time. One person may prefer the waterfront while another goes into the centre. Conversely, if everyone plans to spend every day and evening in the old town, you may not use the benefits of this base. Check the hotel's current facility hours and the inclusions of your rate before arranging the day around them.

Check transport for the travel day
Aeroporto and Oriente are on the Metro's red line; Rossio is on the green line. A trip from Oriente to the old centre needs an onward connection appropriate to the destination. Use the operator's maps and current accessibility information to choose stations and exits. Few changes do not necessarily mean little walking inside stations, and a lift shown on a map is not a promise that it will be available on your day.
Avoid making every hill visit dependent on a funicular or lift. CARRIS publishes separate reopening news, replacement services and route changes. The April 2026 reopening announcement for Graça does not establish that every historic lift is operating. Check the current notice for the particular service and keep a vehicle or lower-town alternative if it is unavailable.
Arrival with luggage deserves its own plan. If taking a vehicle, give the driver the full hotel address and agree on a feasible drop-off point. Mention bulky luggage or mobility equipment when choosing the vehicle. Without dates and a defined party there is no reliable fixed fare or journey time to quote. Compare the same passengers, luggage and booking terms.

What to settle before paying
Ask each parent which situation they most want to avoid: a long slope, stepping over a bath or being allocated far from the other room. Turn that answer into a precise question to the hotel. A written answer about a booked room is more useful than a general accessibility icon. Distinguish a request recorded on a reservation from a room feature confirmed as part of the product.
Compare hotels for the same dates, adults, children and number of rooms, including taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms. No price or availability is promised here. Choose Baixa if the useful rhythm is a lower-town outing followed by a room break; choose Oriente if you will build days around the waterfront and make fewer journeys to the old centre. Leave hilltop visits for the days when everyone wants them.
